Outline (in English)

Course Outline: This lecture surveys the history of written Japanese and transitions in the forms that those written texts have taken.
Learning Objectives: The goal of this lecture is to understand changes in the written language and in techniques for its expression, with a view to anticipating changes that the digital revolution may bring.
Learning Activities Outside of the Classroom: Students should make efforts to keep up with news of new developments in digital techniques, and take care to understand the historical background of literary works that they read.
Grading Criteria/Policy: Grading will be based on: active participation in the class (40%); contents of reaction papers written after each lecture (40%); and an end-of-semester report (20%).
