Outline (in English)

This course will introduce students a fundamental understanding of the politics and society of Oceania through a focus on the history of Pacific Islands.
The course then examines some important specific issues such as human migration; the processes of imperialism and colonialism; militarization as a neocolonialism; decolonization movement by indigenous peoples; navigation and livelihood in the Pacific Ocean. The focus is on before World War II. This course is highly recommended for those who are planning to take “Politics and Society of Oceania II”.
【Learning Objectives】
Students will be able to
1.Develop an awareness of the Pacific Islands and their peoples by learning their politics, society, culture and historical experience.
2. Understand the history of imperialism, colonialism and militarism of Pacific islands and struggle against them by Pacific Islanders.
3. Reviewing key concepts and theories of International Studies and structure of international relations based on the history of Pacific Islands.
4.Develop a critical thinking about some issues in contemporary world from the viewpoints of Pacific Islanders.

The standard time required for preparatory study and review for this class are 2 hours each.

1. Reaction Papers, Quizzes and Small Assignments during the semester:50%
