Outline (in English)

The term “Anthropocene” was coined to suggest that the earth has been moving toward a new geological epoch, based on the recognition that humankind has been become a significant driving force for “changes of a global magnitude on the earth”. Human activities starting at the Industrial Revolution, such as economic activity, utilization of earth resources, transportation, telecommunication including population growth and so on, have rapidly developed and tremendously accelerated in particular since the last half of the 20th century and continue to accelerate even in the 21st century. Energy and material flow characterizing human activities continue to expand globally and their impact on the earth are emerging. Ultimately they leave many questions regarding the sustainable development of human society.
The objectives of this course are: to acquire basic knowledge of energy and the environment; to overview historically the relationship between human activities, centered on utilization of energy and resources, and the environment; to analyze the impact of human activities on the environment in terms of technologies, well-being and culture; to learn the framework to understand today’s energy and environmental issues.
