Outline (in English)

"The formation of mercantilism in Europe"
To begin with, this lecture gives students basic knowledge about the economic development of sixteenth-and seventeenth-century Europe as historical context. Then, it provides an introduction to major theorists of social and economic thought of that time.
In the seventeenth century England underwent internal and external upheavals such as the Union of the Crowns, the Wars of the Three Kingdoms (the Puritan Revolution), the Restoration and the Glorious Revolution. On the other hand, France established an absolute monarchy under the reign of Louis XIV with the help of Mazarin and Colbert. These two kingdoms were to get into economic and military contest for commercial supremacy. Against this backdrop, questions such as “what is the strength of nation?” and “what regime brings economic prosperity?” were discussed among intellectuals, which was to form mercantilism.
