Outline (in English)

This course introduces the essence of the theory of international relations. The Spring semester course pays particular attention to security studies. We first review traditional theories of international relations such as realism and liberalism, and critically analyze how those theories explain war and peace. After discussing the pros and cons of those theories, we next introduce the bargaining theory of war. To be specific, we address the following questions: regardless of the fact that war is ex-post inefficient in that it causes huge economic and human costs, why might war still occur? In addressing this question, we illustrate the three essential concepts: asymmetric information (private information), commitment problem, and issue divisibility. We elaborate on those concepts through actual cases such as the Gulf war and the Iraq war. At the completion of this course, students will have: (1) the understanding of not just the basic nature of international politics but also varieties of theory explaining interactions between states, (2) the analytical thinking skills to not just apply relevant theories to the actual cases and generate plausible policy implication to deal with its problem, but also find out the pitfalls of the existing theories.
