Outline (in English)

This class focuses on reading of academic English essays. The genre of topics of these essays are various such as language, social psychology, higher education, the environment, neuroscience, technology, cybercrime, and so on, which are based on the interest or a problem of our present day society. Each essay has around eight hundred words, is written in a high level of academic and literate English which has a complex sentence structure and syntax, and includes difficult vocabulary. Reading these essays enables students to have both active reading and critical thinking skill and they can acquire English proficiency sufficient as a university student. Additionally, writing a comment is another important task of this class and every student is required to write a comment in English after reading every essay. Beginning from writing a short paragraph, the final goal is writing an essay composed of more than at least three paragraphs, which enables students to cultivate academic writing skill enough to write a short report in the future. The required study time is at least one hour for each class meeting. Before each class meeting, students will be expected to have read the relevant part from the text. However, they need not to prepare for the listening-mini test and all the writing tasks are performed only in class. Every student's overall grade in the class will be decided based on the following: Term-end examination 60%, mini-listening test average score 10%, writing score 10%, and in class contribution 20%.
