Outline (in English)
Practice writing essays in English. Learn a process approach to writing academic texts, from single paragraphs to longer assignments.
The course provides students with essential tools and procedures for essay writing. Students learn to analyze and write the types of paragraphs that commonly occur in academic contexts. They gain an understanding of how to organize the paragraph coherently and use appropriate vocabulary, grammar, and transitional devices in the paragraph body. By acquiring a set of strategies of how to develop a thesis, organize an outline, and write effective introductions and conclusions, students will eventually become competent in writing longer essays on assigned topics and in test situations.
Students are expected to check notes and review previous exercises in the textbook, as well as complete writing assignments. University guidelines suggest preparation and review are around an hour a week for a one-credit course.
Grading will be based on assignments and quizzes (50%), and on a final essay (50%). In principle, no more than 3 absences per term are allowed.

This course will be conducted partly as an on-demand class using Google Classroom and partly in the classroom. In the course, students complete a series of tasks that guide them to effective essay writing in a step-by-step manner. Students will first work on recognizing and identifying key writing structures from model paragraphs and essays. They then manipulate the structures in short and manageable tasks, and finally apply them to their own writing. Students will work individually, with a partner and with a group. Students are expected to submit one full-length essay based on their work by the end of the term. Feedback will be given individually and to the whole class online and in the classroom.
