Outline (in English)
In order to prepare second year students for their extended period of study in an English-speaking country in the subsequent semester, this course aims to enhance students’ abilities to understand and analyze a variety of materials in English and form sophisticated opinions around them which are expressed both orally and in writing. The course will be run as an ongoing, varied discussion, from time to time facilitated by the students themselves. The instructor will introduce a variety of issues and discussion topics, in relation to which students will have discussions and then produce considered oral and written responses in the target language of English.

This course is for second year students who have strong motivation to improve their speaking and writing skills in preparation for studying abroad in an English-speaking country in the subsequent semester. Through extensive discussion and writing practice it will enhance students' abilities to function effectively in an all English-speaking academic and social environment.
到達目標Goal
Building upon English language competencies acquired during the first year of study, the goal of this course is to enable students to become responsible international students who are capable of unsupervised independent learning in an all-English environment.
As a result of studying this this course students will gain enhanced abilities to:
1. Approach issues systematically in order to understand them clearly.
2. Conduct meaningful research in order to deepen understanding.
3. Produce appropriate and considered oral and written responses in English in relation to these issues.

1. Instruction by the teacher will be conducted as much as possible in English.
2. Classroom activities and discussions will generally be based on readings and exercises from the course textbook. Students are expected to use English to participate in classroom discussions and group activities.
3. Special emphasis will be placed upon developing listening and note-taking skills, as well as discussion and presentation skills necessary for successful completion of the students' study abroad programs in the next semester.
4. Students will receive feedback and comments on classroom activities and written assignments directly from the teacher throughout the term.
5. Timekeeping, participation in classroom activities, and submission of written assignments are very important and will be evaluated.

授業時間外の学習(準備学習・復習・宿題等)Work to be done outside of class (preparation, etc.)
University guidelines suggest preparation and review are around 4 hours a week for a two-credit course and around 1 hour a week for a one-credit course.
1. Be sure to read the class materials beforehand for advance learning. Students will be called upon in each class and are expected to be prepared.
2. Each week students should prepare for the next class by reading written materials, completing assigned homework, reviewing notes and materials from previous classes.
3. When participating in a discussion, students should summarize their thoughts beforehand and mull over other students' opinions and indications afterwards in order to deepen their thinking.
4. Students are expected to find and analyze information from various forms of English media independently as a means of increasing their vocabulary and general knowledge.

成績評価の方法と基準Grading criteria
Assessment will consist of classroom participation (40%), group presentations (30%), and 2 written assignments (30%).
**Class attendance is a course requirement.
Students are allowed no more than three absences in the semester.
