Outline (in English)
English 4 focuses on developing basic academic English skills and aims to help students acquire oral and written skills required to communicate effectively in the English language in class. The course will provide students with an opportunity to share ideas and opinions through discussions and presentations and to reinforce listening skills and vocabulary through class activities. For class preparation and review, there will be required assignments including reading and vocabulary learning outside of class. Grading will be based on the following criteria: Active Participation (15%); Quizzes & Homework (30%); Presentation (30%); Final Exam (25%).

授業の概要と目的(何を学ぶか)Outline and objectives
English 4 is designed to develop students’ basic academic English skills with a focus on speaking and writing skills. The objective of the course is to help students acquire oral and written skills required to communicate effectively in the English language through individual and group work. The course will provide students with an opportunity to (1) discuss various topics in a pair/group, (2) give presentations, and (3) develop academic English writing skills. Furthermore, this course will also aim to reinforce listening skills and vocabulary through class activities.

By the end of the course, students will:
(a) be able to articulate their ideas and opinions about different topics, both in speech and writing.
(b) be able to discuss different topics.
(c) be able to summarize the main points of discussion.
(d) be able to give short presentations on topics of their choice.
(e) be able to write paragraphs and essays in an organized and logical manner.
(f) learn about plagiarism and how to avoid it.

Each class will have oral and written activities (individual and group work) as well as a short lecture on the contents of the textbook. Homework will be given regularly. Your attendance and active participation in class is essential. Feedback on class activities and assignments will be given in class.

成績評価の方法と基準Grading criteria
Grading will be based on the following criteria: Active Participation (15%); Quizzes & Homework (30%); Presentation (30%); Final Exam (25%). In principle, no more than 3 absences per semester are allowed.

Bring a dictionary (electronic or paper) to class. Zoom meetings may also be held if necessary. In Zoom classes, prepare a headset with a microphone to avoid audio feedback. Google Classroom is used for assignment submissions and class materials.

Any form of misconduct (e.g., cheating and plagiarism - using without proper citation to the source) is unacceptable. The instructions on how to avoid plagiarism are provided in class.
