Outline (in English)

<Course outline>
The aim of this course is to help students acquire the necessary skills needed to express and share their opinions and experiences on various daily and modern social topics in English. It also enhances the development of students’ skills in discussing topics with classmates. By practicing speaking, writing and listening, it will help students build up the vocabulary knowledge needed to gather information to write essay paragraphs and have discussions in English.

<Learning Objectives>
1. Students will be able to use the English expressions they have learned, and will be able to give their ideas and experiences to classmates verbally.
2. By using English expressions they have learned, the students will be able to share their opinions with each other.
3. Students will be able to write essay paragraphs in logical order, and they will be able to express their ideas and experiences to classmates within the composition.
4. Students will be able to understand all the vocabulary in the textbook and they will be able to use them when speaking and writing.

<Learning activities outside of classroom>
In this course, students should be prepared for class and should be able to review what they have learned in one hour. Before class for Unit (1), students should check the meanings of new vocabulary and phrases in “Language Focus”, and practice reading them out loud. Before class for Unit (2), students should read the passage in the Unit in advance, and write down the following in their notebooks: new vocabulary, summary of the passage in Japanese, and “Comprehension” answers. In addition, students should preview what they will learn beforehand in order to understand topics for discussions in the textbook. After class, students have to review what they have learned.

<Grading Criteria/Policy>
1.Class activities (small tests and writing assignments) 30%
2.Preparation (vocabulary, summary and “Comprehension” answers) 20%
3.Final test 50%
 ・Students will fail the course if they are absent four times or more during the entire unit.
 ・If a student is late three times, it is counted as one absence.
 ・Students should show proof of their delay and absence.
 ・Students who talk in class, use a phone, doze/sleep, or come to class without the textbook will be get a black mark.
