Outline (in English)
The course will develop students ability to communicate in Spoken and Written English. Students will be able to discuss topics and practice skills including: Asking for and giving opinions, Giving reasons and Asking questions. Students will also practice techniques to maintain a conversation. Students will also practice using voice modulation to help communicate content words in an on-line presentation. In addition, students will practice writing paragraphs in an academic style using: Topic sentences with main idea, Supporting ideas with Details and Conclusion. Students will practice using contemporary meeting and presentation applications to achieve the goals.

到達目標Goal
This course will enable the student to communicate his/her thoughts, in written format and in spoken language, to a given audience. The course will cover paragraph development and organization. Students will be encouraged to express their opinion in spoken English giving reasons and asking questions.

授業の進め方と方法Method(s)(学期の途中で変更になる場合には、別途提示します。 /If the Method(s) is changed, we will announce the details of any changes. )
Students will participate in pair and group activities to practice reading, speaking and listening skills. Students will practice writing logically organized paragraphs using the basic paragraph structure: Topic sentence, Supporting sentences, Conclusion.
We will watch some short on-line video presentations to compare the spoken format to the written format.
All assignments will be issued, submitted and returned in digital format via Google Classroom. All written assignments will be returned with detailed comments showing how students can improve their writing skills. We will use Artificial Intelligence applications (OpenAI, Bard etc.) to generate written assignments and analyze the results.
This is an online course and all lessons will be taught on Zoom.

University guidelines suggest preparation and review are around 2 hours a week for a two-credit course and around an hour a week for a one-credit course.
3 Homework assignments writing different styles of paragraph.
All assignments written in digital format and submitted via Gmail.
To assist in providing feedback, Google Docs format is required.

The English Course "Discussion Book One", Gary Ireland and Max Woolerton. Available from < store.theenglishcompany.jp >. Look in the カタログ and search for DB1. A CD is not required but you might like to practice. If you purchase a book second-hand, you will need to pay The English Company 890 yen to access The Study Centre.

学生が準備すべき機器他Equipment student needs to prepare
A portable electronic device, laptop or tablet is best, with a Word Processing capability. Access to Zoom (Zoom.us) is required. Students will be required to use headphones if joining the lesson from Hosei University classrooms.
Hosei Gmail account details will be required. We will use Hosei University wi-fi service.
その他の重要事項Others
We will use Google “Classroom” to send, submit and record Written and Worksheet assignments. Students will be required to join the subject using “Classroom”. Please download Google Classroom to your device before our first class. The "Classroom" Course code will be advised, via the university Hoppii system, in April.
Students are expected to check their Hosei Gmail account at least once per week.
