Outline (in English)
You will learn English writing and speaking mainly in this class. However, this course aims to enhance your English (listening, speaking, reading and writing) holistically. You will have a lot of chances to communicate with your classmates and me in English. You will also debate and make a group presentation with your classmates. You are expected to make a good learning community through participation in this class.

この授業では、英語のライティングとスピーキングを中心に学習しますが、リーディング、リスニングも含めた4技能を統合的に発展させることを目標とします。クラスでは英語でのコミュニケーションの機会がたくさんあります。ディベートやグループプレゼンテーションも行います。このような授業に積極的に参加することで良い学習環境をともに創造していきましょう。
到達目標Goal
You will try to achieve four goals: 1) to improve your English writing and speaking communicative competence; 2) to know and understand yourself better; 3) to think of your future life and career through the course work; and 4) to progress your English proficiency (listening, speaking, reading and writing) holistically.

You will learn:
1) communication strategies (e.g., shadowing and summarizing)
2) basic English writing knowledge (e.g., organization, topic sentences, how to write a letter or an e-mail)
3) presentation/debate skills and strategies
4) collaborative learning
5) the importance of understanding various perspectives on controversial issues and logical thinking
6) practice making small talk in every class
*I will give you my oral and written feedback on your assignments in class.

1) to read assigned units and look up words and phrases you don’t know in the dictionary before the class.
2) to watch or listen to an English program regularly.
University guidelines suggest preparation and review are around four hours a week for a two-credit course and around an hour a week for a one-credit course.

class participation (20%), presentation (20%), assignments (10%), and final examination (50%)
*If you have four absences per semester without permission, do not make a group presentation, or do not take a term examination, you cannot receive a credit for this course.
