Outline (in English)
This course is designed to give opportunities to read authentic English passages from a wide range of subjects effectively and to acquire a habit of thinking logically by recognizing the flow of ideas and learning structural patterns. We will also aim at expanding your vocabulary and phrases to develop your confidence of presenting your ideas in your words.
<Learning Objectives>
・You will expand your vocabulary
・You will learn the natural flow of English; get used to pronouncing English sentences and improving your pronunciation
・You will be able to guess words in context
・You will identify main ideas as well as supporting detail
・You will identify the structure and outline the passage
・You will be able to read between the lines, make inferences and draw appropriate conclusions
・You will be able to retell the story in English
＜Learning Activities outside of class＞
・Preparation: You are expected to understand the subject of each chapter and go through the reading passage before each class. Write out the topic (“what” is the passage about) and “how” the author explains his or her ideas/claim in the passage
・Review: Review thoroughly on new words and phrases you come across and make a habit of using such expressions; Do make sure to retell the story you have understood in your own words
・University guidelines suggest preparation and review should take around an hour a week for a one-credit course

授業の概要と目的（何を学ぶか）Outline and objectives
日常的に使われる自然な英語で書かれている教材を使い、様々なタイプの英文エッセイを読みながら、効果的に英文を読むためのストラテジーを学び応用する力をつけていく。各パラグラフの構造とパラグラフ同士のつながりを意識しながら全体の流れと大意を取ることで読解力を上げていき、さらにその内容を「自分の言葉」で説明する練習をする。

・英語独自の音やリズムを身につける
・英語を口に出して言うことに慣れる
・難しい単語の理解に執着せず、文脈から意味を予測できる
・英語のセンテンスをフレーズごとに英語のままの順序で把握できる
・エッセイから必要な「情報」を取り出し、メモすることができる
・各パラグラフの論旨、そしてエッセイ全体の構造を把握できる
・把握した内容を自分の言葉で説明できる

授業時間外の学習（準備学習・復習・宿題等）Work to be done outside of class (preparation, etc.)
・予習では各パッセージを事前に読み、練習問題に目を通しておく。筆者が「なにを」「どのように」主張・説明しているかを把握し、英語で書きだす
・テキストで使用されたフレーズ表現を徹底して復習し、日本語を介さず理解できるように復唱することを習慣化する
・理解するだけで満足せず、それを英語で「自分の言葉で」説明する練習も面倒がらずに繰り返していく
・ユニットごとに実施される単語の試験で修得程度を確認すること
・本授業の準備学習・復習時間は、合わせて1時間を標準とする

成績評価の方法と基準Grading criteria
・授業態度・積極性30％（授業にただ参加するだけではなく、英語を声に出して言うことを各自が習慣づけられるようにするためにも、特にoral activityを中心とした授業中の英語への積極的な取り組みを重視する。予習は必須であるが、正解でないことで減点にはならない。）
ユニットごとに行われる小テスト20%
・Review Text 50%
適切な理由のない遅刻（授業開始から３０分以内）は２回で欠席扱いとする。また各学期欠席が４回以上の場合は、原則として単位習得を認めない。
・適切な理由と証拠提出による公欠の場合には、代替措置を設定しますので要相談

・対面授業は皆さんの英語で考えようとする自主的で積極的な参加があるとテンポよく進み、またグループワークで互いに刺激しあうことが出来ていました
・英語を英語で説明することに苦労したようですが、考える習慣がつき、さらに筆者が「言おうとしていること」であるメイン・アイディアを把握できた受講生は、英語で説明したり発話することに抵抗がなくなったようでした
・英文を「ただ話はなんとなく読む」だけでは成長しません。読んで理解した内容を筆者の立てた筋道に沿って説明するのは簡単ではなく練習が必要となり、年度により完成度は異なりますが、確実に英語力を向上させることになります

電子辞書、また携帯電話やスマホの辞書アプリの使用を認めるが、授業中に許可なく携帯やスマホのその他のアプリの使用が見られた場合には禁止せざるを得なくなることを肝に銘じて使用すること。
その他の重要事項Others
・授業中の共同作業では大人として積極的な協力姿勢が求められます
・口頭練習が多いため、感染症対策として授業では不織布のマスク着用を求めます
・欠席や課題提出が遅れたことをメールで連絡する場合には、理由説明と根拠となる証拠の提示が必須
・適切な理由と証拠提出による欠席の場合には、代替措置を設定しますので要相談
