Outline (in English)
This is a Spring semester English course for Second Year students who have chosen English as their main Second Language. This class will assist students to further develop their English proficiency, by shifting to more content-based English-learning.
'Just in case' Online Learning might be needed, please prepare your computer/FAST HOME Wi-Fi/headset/microphone/FREE Skype/FREE Zoom/FREE 'Romaji' gmail accounts; & please test them WELL, long before we meet.
Cameras might not be used, to protect privacy...and to save Internet Bandwidth/speed.

This is a Spring semester English course for Second Year students who have chosen English as their main Second Language. This class will assist students to further develop their English proficiency, by shifting to more content-based English-learning.
到達目標Goal
Students will learn about cultures & social practices from around the English-speaking world; and will also learn how to explain Japanese culture to English-speaking people in this Global Society. Students will have to learn how to think critically [in-depth] about important Global Issues; and will have to effectively express their own thoughts and opinions in English.

Students will be challenged to integrate their skills in English listening, speaking, reading, & writing in an advanced manner, via exposure to authentic English materials such as English News videos & audio, and inspirational video/audio talks (including TED Talks). Students will then be required to practice their English communication skills via pair practice conversations with their classmates & professor.
(BECAUSE OF THE COVID-19 SITUATION, SOME OF OUR CLASSES MIGHT NEED TO BE HELD ONLINE.)

第3回[オンライン/online]：Using the Future tense in English, to explain your Golden Week plans.
Active English spoken expressions, re: Golden Week future plans. News video/TED video #2.
第4回[オンライン/online]：Actively explaining your Golden Week activities, in spoken English.
Actively speaking about Golden Week, in spoken English, using the Past Tense. News video/TED Talk #2 (continued).

Pairwork will be used to practice many, various ways to reply dynamically in English, to questions such as ''How's it going?'' News video/TED Talk #3, part 1.
第6回[オンライン/online]：Expressing your opinions about Current Affairs News videos/TED Talk #3 part 2, in active, dynamic spoken English.
Pair practice: speaking your opinions about News videos/TED Talks, in active English.
第7回[オンライン/online]：Video documentary or News clips, with questions about it.
Students will learn how to speak their opinions (in English) to classmates, about a Current Affairs topic.
第8回[オンライン/online]：News or TED Talk video #4, part 1.
Pair practice in spoken English, to explain student opinions about the topics raised by the video.
第9回[オンライン/online]：News or TED Talk video #4, part 2.
Explaining, in spoken English, student opinions about the topics in the video.
第10回[オンライン/online]：Use of many different English adjectives, to explain opinions and comments.
Students will explain their opinions about many current topics to classmates, in smooth, Modern English.

Students will watch the News or TED video clip...and will be asked to discuss (& give opinions about) that video, in smooth, spoken English.
第12回[オンライン/online]：News or TED Talk video #5, part 2./ Preparation & practice, for Exam (topics studied and discussed during the Spring 2022 semester).
Students will watch the News or TED video clip; will be asked to answer questions about it; and will then discuss (& give opinions about) that video, in smooth, spoken English./ Prep & practice for Speaking exam.

Speaking exam. Students will be asked to reply, in smooth spoken English, to questions about the topics that we learned & practiced in the Spring semester.

授業時間外の学習（準備学習・復習・宿題等）Work to be done outside of class (preparation, etc.)
Please do homework well before the deadline [NOT ''ichiyazukke'']; please learn to wake up early, and to arrive in class ON TIME [not late]; please don't work at part-time jobs excessively; and please keep a weekly notebook/binder for this class, using pen.
University guidelines suggest preparation and review are around 4 hours a week for a two-credit course and around an hour a week for a one-credit course.

A textbook might be chosen, depending on students levels & requirements. Also, some handouts will be distributed to students. In addition, some News videos & TED Talks may be assigned as in-class or at-home viewing (with questions about those videos).

成績評価の方法と基準Grading criteria
Tentatively, grading may depend on in-class responses (approximately 25%); speaking exams spoken replies (approximately 25%);in-class perfomance(approximately 15%); class participation/motivation (20%); and homework (15%).
* IMPORTANT: A MAXIMUM OF THREE ABSENCES IS ALLOWED...& ONE LATE IS EQUIVALENT TO HALF AN ABSENCE. *

Please bring to each class: a notebook/binder; a black pen; a red pen; an English-Japanese/Japanese-English dictionary [paper or electronic]; an English language LARGE namecard; and a daily planner/schedule book [a 'techo', in Nihongo].

Because of the Covid-19 SITUATION, some classes might have to be ONLINE.
Please contact me via e-mail (TonyDur2020@gmail.com), at least ONE WEEK before Spring classes begin. We are all novices at 'Online Learning', so we will all probably make some 'mis-steps'. Please PERSEVERE...and keep in touch.
We MIGHT try to arrange some Online video classes/chats...after resolving technical issues. Please make sure that you have an Internet-enabled PC. Also, maybe Docomo, Au, & Sofbank will permit you to have an extra 50GB of access, free. (Please check.)
