Outline (in English)
In this class, students will read and write several kinds of text. In addition, they will study lots of useful skills that will make reading and writing easier, faster and more effective.

The goal of this course is to develop students' reading and writing skills. This class will help students to prepare for academic study, to take English reading exams such as TOEIC and IELTS. Furthermore, it will help students to get ready for the workplace of tomorrow.
到達目標Goal
Students will study and practise a number of valuable academic reading and writing skills including, skimming, scanning, vocabulary building, note-taking, identifying main points, summarizing, gathering ideas, researching, outlining, organising ideas logically and writing and revising drafts. They will read and write a variety of authentic texts such as articles, essays, and stories. Students will develop their ability to accurately understand authentic texts and think critically about them. Students will also develop their ability to express their opinions, exchange knowledge and experiences in a clear and attractive way in the written form. Additionally, students will give critical feedback to classmates on their writing and receive useful feedback in return. Students will practise self-editing and peer editing as important methods to improve their work.

Active participation is necessary. Students will need to prepare for class well, so that we can explore each topic in depth. In class, we will exchange opinions, plan, revise and comment on each other’s work in pairs and small groups. Two or three writing tasks will be required. Students will need to keep a portfolio/ record of their writing tasks online using Google Classroom. Feedback will be given online and in the class as necessary.

授業時間外の学習(準備学習・復習・宿題等)Work to be done outside of class (preparation, etc.)
本授業の準備学習・復習時間は、合わせて1時間を標準とします。/University guidelines suggest preparation and review should be around an hour a week for a one-credit course.
Homework will include reading assignments, review exercises, vocabulary exercises, writing drafts, self-editing and revising drafts, as well as preparation tasks for class speaking activities. Students will have homework after every class.
