Outline (in English)
This is a content based English language course which uses film as content. We study the American Western and try to understand the cultural background that created these films and why they are of such enduring interest to both Americans and people studying American culture.
As for learning objectives, there will be an initial focus on listening and note taking skills supplemented by readings which both reinforce the lectures and introduce additional topics for writing and discussion. Throughout the semester writing skills will emphasize the production of paragraphs with proper topic and supporting sentences along with a clear conclusion. Students will comment on lectures and readings and ask and answer questions.
Students are expected to study for a total of 1 hour outside of classroom for each lecture.
There are three components to the grade. First, there are usually quizzes given each week except for when the discussions are held. This amounts to between nine and eleven quizzes in the semester. The lowest two quiz grades are dropped and the average of the remaining quiz grades will count for 60% of the total grade for the class. Writing assignments all together will count for 30% of the grade and the remaining 10% of the grade will be based on participation in the class discussions. As per the guidelines established by the University only three absences will be permitted during the semester.
