Outline (in English)

This course is designed to help students develop their reading and listening skills. Students will read essays on a wide range of issues in the world today and listen to conversations (and short talks) on a variety of related topics, thinking critically about them. Students will also give a short presentation, integrating skills and knowledge acquired during the course and developing their confidence in English communication.

The goals are to develop the abilities to read, summarize and comment on the essays, grasp the main points of spoken materials, read aloud effectively, and communicate one’s opinions and ideas about the topics.

Completing assignments (preparation for the class, including listening to a recording, reading the text and answering questions) before each class meeting is essential. Students are expected to spend at least an hour per week preparing for and reviewing each class.

Grading criteria: active class participation, assignments and quizzes (85%), final presentation (15%). In principle, no more than 3 absences per semester are allowed.
