Outline (in English)

Small and medium enterprises (SMEs) form the basis of the Japanese economy. There are mainly two major arguments in the previous researches on SMEs. One is “Problem driven,” which claims that SMEs have difficulties growing due to limited resources. The other is 2) “Contribution driven,” which claims SMEs' potentiality and advantages because of its flexibility. This course deals with general theories on SMEs, considering these two different arguments. We discuss the following subjects; 1) What is a small business? 2) Why do SMEs have problems and potentiality/advantages? 3) What is a venture business? Additionally, we invite guest lecturers from SMEs in the Tama area to acquire a comprehensive understanding of SMEs.
