Outline (in English)

This course is a general introduction to linguistics, the study of language, concentrating not only on Japanese but also on other languages. It aims at acquainting the students with the nature of human language and its characteristics. The course examines the language sounds and their patterns (phonetics and phonology), the structures of words and sentences (morphology and syntax), and context-independent/dependent meanings (semantics and pragmatics). It also explores how linguistic knowledge is applied in social situations (sociolinguistics) and how languages change over time (historical linguistics). At the end of the course, students are expected to understand and explain any language including Japanese by using the methodology of linguistics.
