Outline (in English)

Course Outline:
Innovation design increasingly takes a human-centered or user-centered design approach. This approach suggests that product and service development should start from a deep analysis of user needs. In practice, researchers spend time in the field observing customers or clients and their environment to acquire an in-depth understanding of their lifestyles and cultures. This research becomes the basis for a better understanding of their needs, problems and ways of thinking. Much of this research employs qualitative, ethnographic methods associated with the field of anthropology. How to use anthropological methods for innovation in products and services, human-computer and human-machine interaction as well as educational design is the focus of this course.

Learning Objectives:
In this class students will practice traditional methods of ethnography--interviewing and observation. In addition, students will gain experience in co-creation methods. As groups students will plan and carry out a research project together.

Learning activities outside of the classroom:
Students will do fieldwork interviews, transcription and analysis outside of class time to complete their group project.

Grading Criteria:
In class activities (30%), Interview data & analysis (40%), Final paper and presentation (30%)
