Outline (in English)

【Course outline】
Recently, it has been found that there is more interweaving relationship between physical activity and disease. However, the interpretation of this relationship among the general population varies widely in terms of the type of exercise and its intensity and volume. Moreover, details on the advantage and benefit of exercise as comparing to risk are not recognized or determined very well. Among different types of exercises, walking and yoga are easy to conduce expecting some health benefit. In this lecture, students learn the influence on the body with modes of walking and yoga practice.

【Learning Objectives】
1. To be able to understand the significance of " walking" as the basis of human exercise.
2. To be able to explain about Sports Walking.
3. To be able to explain the effects of Sports Walking.
4. To be able to practice the basic techniques of Sports Walking.
5. To be able to give an overview of Yoga and understand its history and philosophy
6. Understand yoga asanas and anatomy, and be able to give notes on them.
7. Understand the significance of breathing exercises and be able to practice them.
8. To be able to explain and practice meditation
9. To be able to explain about sports injuries.
10. To be able to explain the effects of walking and yoga on the autonomic nervous system.

【Learning activities outside of classroom】
Each student is expected to be in good physical condition before attending the class so that there will be no physical or mental deficiencies during the physical activities in the class. You will be instructed on assignments to be done after class and preparations for the next class as necessary. The standard preparation and review time for this class is 2 hours each.

【Grading Criteria/Policy】
The overall evaluation will be based on the following distribution.
 1) Assignments to be done in each class (reaction papers, short quizzes, reports, etc.): 60%.
 2) Final report: 20%.
 3) Participation in class activities (not attendance): 20%.
If you are absent or submit assignments after the due date, your evaluation will be affected.
If attendance is less than 2/3 of the class, the grade will be “D” or “E“.
This grading method is a general rule, and students who have difficulty with regular activities will be dealt with and evaluated on an individual basis.
