Outline (in English)

This is a course to learn Indian Hinayana (ZrAvakayAna) Buddhism and Mahayana (BodhisattvayAna) Buddhism.
The aim of this course is to give students a historical elucidation of the reason of the philosophical diversification in Indian Buddhism and an understanding of the historical and philosophical development of Indian Buddhists' world view (cosmology) and view of life.
By the end of the course, students should be able to understand the followings:
1. SarvAstivAdin's interpretation of impermanence, i.e., momentaliness of conditioned dharmas.
2. Madhyamaka philosophy consisting in dependent arising, emptiness, middle way and nonabiding nirvana.
3. DharmakIrti's and later MAdhyamika position on scriptural authority.
Before/after each class meeting, students will be expected to spend four hours to understand the course content.
Your overall grade in the class will be decided based on the following: Term-end examination (60%), Short reports (30%) and Contribution in class (10%).
