Outline (in English)

This is a course to learn early Indian Buddhist philosophy.
The aim of this course is to give students both an elucidation of Gotama Buddha's own philosophy by means of historical study and an understanding of its philosophical meaning by means of the comparative study between his philosophy and Western philosophy.
By the end of the course, students should be able to understand the followings:
1. The Buddha's philosophy consisting in dependent arising, impermanence, sufferings and selflessness.
2. His own idea on nirvana.
3. His ideas exposed in the Sutta Nipata and Dhammapada.
4. Buddhist morality explained in the vinaya.
Before/after each class meeting, students will be expected to spend four hours to understand the course content.
Your overall grade in the class will be decided based on the following: Term-end examination (60%), Short reports (30%) and Contribution in class (10%).
