Outline (in English)

【Course outline】
Many people think that because ordinary Japanese native speakers can speak "Japanese," they can communicate smoothly with foreign students who have mastered Japanese to some extent. However, just because one can speak a certain level of "language" does not mean that this knowledge guarantees communication. This is because communication is a reciprocal act, in which factors other than "language" are intricately intertwined. If communication fails, it does not mean that only one party is responsible. If an unconscious act of speech goes against the expectation of the other person, the communication will break down.
In order to make Japanese communication smooth, we will analyze how familiar Japanese language is formed and find out the laws behind the Japanese we use unconsciously. Students will deepen their thinking about the formation of knowledge about the Japanese language, its differences from other languages such as the native language of Japanese learners, and grammar and vocabulary for communication.
【Learning Objectives】
By the end of the course, students should be able to do the followings:
1. to understand what speech looks like in real life, and to develop the ability to establish communication.
2. to acquire the knowledge and ability to reflect on speech when communication is not successful, and to revise expressions to avoid misunderstanding.
【Learning activities outside of classroom】
Students will be expected to reflect on your linguistic life in Japan, and consciously observe specific examples of misunderstandings and misinterpretations, and think seriously about the causes and reasons for these misunderstandings. Your study time will be more than four hours for a class.
【Grading Criteria /Policy】
Your overall grade in the class will be decided based on the following:
Term-end examination: 30%, Short reports : 40%, in class contribution: 30%
