Outline (in English)

1.Course outline
This is an introductory course on linguistics as an empirical science. It covers main areas of linguistics (e.g., syntax, morphology, semantics, phonetics, and phonology) and gives basic knowledge and illustrates specific research topics in these areas. This course aims to help students understand a scientific method of theoretical linguistics and find a research area that suits their interests.

2.Learning objectives
In this course, students are expected to achieve the followings:

(a) Being able to understand basic knowledge in each field of linguistics.
(b) Being sensitive to facts about languages that are spoken around them, and being able to do introductory consideration and analysis of a fact which they noticed.
(c) Having a correct understanding of a scientific research methodology.

3.Learning activities outside of classroom
Preparatory study and review time for this course are 2 hours each.

(a) Preparation
If you read through a handout which is distributed in advance before class, the content of that day's class will be easier to understand. In addition, students are expected to think back to the contents which they have learned in previous classes related to the content of that day's class before class.

(b) Review
You should get the content of that day's class straight by checking handouts and your notes. If a homework is given in that day's class, please work on it prior to attending next week's class. Then, if you have any questions, first of all, please make an effort to provide your answer to it. Furthermore, when you find something similar to the linguistic phenomena that were introduced in this course in daily life, I'd like you to consider the phenomena using the methods that you have learned in this course.
