Outline (in English)

Course Outline: This course deals with the yomihon (full-length novels of the Edo period), and reads Nansō satomi hakkenden (Kyokutei Bakin, 1814-42).
Learning Objectives: By the end of the course, students should have attained the following:
— Knowledge of the literary genre yomihon.
— A solid understanding of characterization in Nansō satomi hakkennden, obtained through doing assignments.
— An appreciation of the historical importance of Kyokutei Bakin's works.
Learning Activities Outside of the Classroom: Before each class meeting, students will be expected to read distributed text materials. And after each class, students will be expected to review the last class.
Grading Criteria/Policy: Grading will be decided based on a term-end examination (40%)、and assignments and in-class contribution (60%).
