Outline (in English)

Even in our age of natural science and technology, religion is thriving, not dying. What does religion mean to the human mind, and how has it influenced the way we think and live?
The purpose of this course is to shed light on the formation and development of Christian theology, and to examine this in the context of its contemporary thought, in order to consider how religious thought emerges and develops, what faith is, why it can be considered as discipline, etc.
In the spring term we will begin with a general overview of religion and then study the development of Christian thoughts up to the Middle Ages, focusing on some characteristic themes of medieval theologians.
Students are expected by the end of the course 1) to understand characteristics and truths of faith in the examples of Christian thoughts until the Middle Ages, 2) to understand what God has been thought to be (or not to be) in relation to the thought of theologians, and 3) to explain their understandings clearly in their own words.
Before each class meeting, students are to read carefully the relevant text of the next class and to summarize what the text is arguing for. Required study time is two hours each before and after the class.
Grade will be decided on the following proportion. In-class contribution: 25%, Mid-term examination: 20%, Term-end examination or report: 55% (if no mid-term examination is given, 75%).
