Outline (in English)

This course introduces Georges Bataille's strange trilogy, The Summa Atheologica. We can consider these works as a modern attempt to defend a mysticism without God, that delves into the various concepts that form the core of Western thought ("God", "Human", "Subject", "Experience", "Thought", "meaning" etc.) to the limit of their semantic effects. We try to re-consider this difficult book on the brink of modern thought, and at the end of the course, students should be able to philosophically explain concepts such as "God," "human," "subject," "experience," and "thought" at a certain level from the perspective of "atheism" as proposed by Bataille.
Students will be expected to have completed the required assignments after each class meeting. Your study time will be more than four hours for a class.
Final grade will be calculated according to the following process Mid-term report and in-class contribution (80%), and term-end examination (20%).
In the second semester, we will read the second half of "The Guilty" (1944) and "On Nietzsche" (1945) .
