Outline (in English)

The purpose of this course is to get students aquainted with the fundamental analysis, which is to analyze corporations from the point of view of investors. In general, corporations can be analyzed with respect to each of functional areas, such as management, strategic management, finance, accounting, marketing, and operations management. But the performance of a corporation depends on all of these functional areas.
Therefore, students in this course are strongly encouraged to apply all the knowledge and skills they have acquired in the courses they have taken so far at the Faculty of Business Administration. For this reason, we spend the Spring semester on the reading of textbooks in one or two of these areas. In the Fall semester, each student chooses a company and analyzes it from the point of view of investors and presents his or her analysis in class as well as on the Web site set up for this course.

Learning objectives: This course has three main objectives. First, students should be able to learn how to analyze a specific company from the standpoint of an investor or a lender and be able to apply the techniques to actual companies. Second, students should be able to read technical books effectively. Third, students should be able to summarize the results of their analysis in a resume and present it in an easy-to-understand manner in the seminar.

Learning activities outside of the classroom: Prior study of the textbook, analysis of the chosen company, and preparation of presentation. A student is expected to spend about four hours every week to read the text, analyze the chosen company or prepare for the presentation.

Grading criteria/policy:
[Evaluation of junior students]
Grading will be based on several factors, including the quality of resumes, presentations, participation in discussions, and contributions to seminar activities outside of class. As a rule of thumb, a grade A will be given to students who have satisfactorily performed these activities. On the other hand, students who do not perform well in these activities will receive a grade of A- or lower, and a junior who performs poorly may not be allowed to participate in this seminar when he or she become a senior. In other words, students are not automatically allowed to continue to participate in this seminar in their second year.

[Evaluation of senior students]
Senior students will be evaluated in the same way as junior students. Note, however, that senior students are expected to perform better than junior students.

(Note for both 3rd and 4th year students)
This seminar has strict rules regarding attendance, tardiness, and leaving early. In addition, strict rules will be applied to preparing presentation materials in a timely manner. Therefore, in the unlikely event where you violate any of these rules, you may be asked to refrain from participating in the seminar at the time of advancement to the senior year, and in some cases, you may be advised to withdraw from the seminar in the middle of the academic year.
