Outline (in English)

In this class, we will analyze the representation of the American Dream in literature and films. The idea of the American Dream has been present since the founding of the nation. We will consider some of the reasons why it has exercised such fascination in American society. By tracing the motif of dream in American cinema, we will discuss the role of self-governance, democracy, equal opportunity, and the frontier in the U.S. history. We will also discuss why particular genres such as the Western came to embody the spirit of the American Dream more than any other genres.
