Outline (in English)

This class deals with issues in the field of Japanology (Japanese studies) in the post-war era, especially in connection with Ruth Benedict's The Chrysanthemum and the Sword (1946). After initial lectures on the content of Benedict's book, students give presentations (3 sessions in total) on Benedict's discussion and understanding of the Japanese concepts of on (Chapters 5 & 6), giri (Chapters 7 & 8), and haji (Chapter 10). Other topics of lectures given by the instructor include the Nihonjinron (studies of the Japanese) of the 1960s and 1970s, criticisms of these studies in succeeding decades, and trends in the translation of Japanese classical literature in the post-war era. The class uses many sources written in English; existing Japanese translations are provided, and often commented on, by the instructor.
