Outline (in English)

《Outline》 Students will read Noh scripts that have been performed uninterruptedly for nearly 700 years and learn what kind of theatre Noh is. Using Noh scripts in Zeami's own handwriting, if available, and referring to old chant books from the Muromachi and Edo periods, learn about the characteristics of Noh scripts that differ from current chant books, the subsequent changes in lyrics and direction, and the problem of Zeami's revisions of Noh scripts.

Learning objects of this class are as follows:
(1) Familiarise yourself with the unique script and symbols of Zeami's Noh books and learn to read their contents.
(2) To be able to prepare texts of Noh plays to be studied by collating ancient chant books.
(3) Learn about historical changes, such as revisions of lyrics and changes in staging.
(4) Learn about the issue of revision by Zeami.
(5) Doctoral students will be able to find problems in each work and write essays linking them to their own research topics.
