Outline (in English)

《Outline》 Students will learn what kind of theatre Noh is by reading the scripts of Noh plays, which have been performed uninterruptedly for nearly 700 years. The focus will be on the changing seasons, the devastation of places, ageing and death depicted in Noh plays, and while reading the scripts carefully, students will also increase their knowledge of the devices used in staging Noh plays and the characteristics of the individual Shōdan.

Learning objects of this class are as follows:
(1) To become familiar with the rhetoric specific to Noh texts and to be able to grasp the content accurately.
(2) Learn about the representation of impermanence in Noh.
(3) Acquire basic knowledge of the kodan structure of Noh and the characteristics of each kodan.
(4) Learn about the basic staging of Noh and the variations in kosho.
(5) Doctoral students will be able to find problems in each work and write essays on them in connection with their own research topics.

《Learning activities outside of classroom》Deciphering old manuscripts and researching previous studies should be carried out by each student at the Noh theatre Research Institute.
《Grading Criteria》Presentation on the part you have been assigned 70%. Ordinary marks 30%.
