Outline (in English)

This course explores Western and Japanese modern sociological and political theories. We will learn the differences between theories that emerged from the Western realities and theories that were generated in Japan or from Japanese scholars. The course also intends to learn the (in)applicability of Western theories to Japanese or other non-western societies. The fall semester focuses on mobile sociology. We will learn the significance of the new mobility paradigm and approach to capture our social phenomena through mobility. We will also examine migrants to Japan as an example of the mobility of people and see how migration emerges, develops, and, as a result, changes Japanese society.
