Outline (in English)

This course explores modern Western and Japanese sociological and political theories. We will learn the differences between theories that emerged from Western realities and theories that were generated in Japan or by Japanese scholars. The course also intends to learn the (in)applicability of Western theories to Japanese or other non-western societies. Spring semester focuses on cultural sociology, mainly through reading Pierre Bourdieu's influential work "Distinction." We will also examine the approach of cultural, sociological research through the analysis of contemporary Japanese culture.
