Outline (in English)

(Course outline)Taking into consideration the subject matter and language skills of the student, the student may subscribe to one of the two volumes of Joachim Whaley, Germany and the Holy Roman Empire (Oxford University Press, 2012) (which one to read is up to the student's research). (determined after planning hearings), and critically examine its contents with reference to other related literature.
(Learning Objectives)Through the rule of the early modern Holy Roman Empire, which constituted an order that was the opposite of a "sovereign state," we will learn about the tension between traditional identity and functional innovation in early modern European politics, and the structure of their symbiosis.
(Learning activities outside of classroom)In addition to preparing for the text (not a Japanese translation, but understanding the content in advance), we will also do preliminary research on historical issues that appear in the text.
(Grading Criteria /Policy)Students will be graded based on the degree to which they demonstrate originality based on previous research regarding the political structure of early modern Europe.
