Outline (in English)
In this course, students are expected to carefully read Eve Kosofsky Sedgwick's Between Men: English Literature and Male Homosocial Desire (1985) and Epistemology of the Closet (1990) and Aldous Huxley's Eyeless in Gaza (1936) to discuss the texts and their relevant themes and issues. The goals of this course are to acquire the technique of interpreting literature and present a new interpretation convincingly. Before/after each class meeting, students will be expected to spend four hours to understand the course content. The final grade will be calculated according to the following process: participation in discussion (30%), presentation (30%) and term-end essay (40%).

授業の概要と目的（何を学ぶか）Outline and objectives
＜講義題目：英国小説における「男同士の絆」＞
この授業では、今日も色褪せない批評理論の名著、Eve Kosofsky SedgwickのBetween Men (1985)とEpistemology of the Closet (1990)の抜粋をみなで読み、そのテーマや問題について議論する。また、同書を参考にしながら、Aldous HuxleyのEyeless in Gaza (1936)などを分析し、その理論の有効性や限界についても確認する。
文学を解釈するための専門的技術を身につけ、自分の解釈を説得力をもって主張することが目的である。
到達目標Goal
・Between MenとEpistemology of the Closetで展開された理論を噛み砕いて説明できる。
・Eyeless in Gazaを読了し、その背景事情を含めて説明できる。
・歴史的文脈やほかの作品との関係でテクストの意義を論じられる。
・長編小説を読み通せるだけの英語力をつける。

発表者はレジュメを必ず用意すること。レジュメには、要約のみならず論点や意見などの提示が必要である。発表にあたっていなくても、テクストをしっかりと読み、自身の考えをまとめてゼミに参加すること。
予習・復習は各2時間を標準とする。
