Outline (in English)
This class is a seminar on the novels of Henry James. Through the close reading of James’s The Wings of the Dove (1902), students develop their skills to analyze literary texts in a critical way with focus both on their individuality and historicity.
Most classes consist of presentations by students, class discussions, and lectures. Before each meeting, students are expected to spend 8 or more hours completing reading assignments and preparing for class discussion.
Grades will be determined based on the following:
1) Participation and discussion (30%)
2) Presentations (30%)
3) Final paper (40%)

講義題目：ヘンリー・ジェイムズ研究
本授業は、ヨーロッパとアメリカの狭間で揺れ動く人物たちの姿を緻密に描き出すことを通じて小説ジャンルの革新者となったHenry Jamesの作品を１年間を通じて研究する。近代小説（novel）の歴史とアメリカ小説の特質についての代表的な議論をふまえたうえで、ジェイムズの長編作品を精読する。秋学期は、視点人物の意識を深く掘り下げる技法でモダニズムの先駆ともなったジェイムズ後期（円熟期）の三部作のひとつであり米文学史上屈指の傑作The Wings of the Dove（1902）を扱う。
なお、本授業は英文学科専門科目「英語圏文学研究A」としても開講され、学部3・4年生も履修する。学部生と共に受講し、授業内で大学院生が指導的役割を演じる機会を得ることも目的の重要なひとつである。

受講者は毎週予習として作品または批評を読み、発言できるよう準備をした上で授業に臨む。
授業は講義と演習を織り交ぜたかたちで進める。受講者の発表担当がある回では、発表者がハンドアウトを作成してプレゼンテーションをおこない、担当コメンテーターによるコメント・質問、そして全体でのディスカッションをする。適宜教員による補足説明がなされる。発表担当者は、担当範囲の内容を要約したうえで、重要と思われる箇所をいくつか引用して分析し、ディスカッションのためのトピックを提示する。
発表に対しては授業内で口頭によるレスポンスがなされ、レポートに対してはフィードバックのコメントをつけたファイルが返却される。

毎回事前に課題（作品または批評）を読んで、ディスカッションに積極的に参加できるように準備する。面白かった点、考察したい点、質問したい点、気になった表現などについてメモをとっておく。分からない用語や固有名詞はできるだけ自分で調べる。（8時間以上）
