Outline (in English)

This class is a seminar on the novels of Henry James. The course begins with a historical and theoretical survey of the novel genre, framing the questions of what the novel is and what the novel does, as well as what is “American” in the American novel. In the second half of the semester, through the close reading of James’s The Portrait of a Lady (1881), students develop their skills to analyze literary texts in a critical way with focus both on their individuality and historicity.

Most classes consist of presentations by students, class discussions, and lectures. Before each meeting, students are expected to spend 8 or more hours completing reading assignments and preparing for class discussion.

Grades will be determined based on the following:
1) Participation and discussion (30%)
2) Presentations (30%)
3) Final paper (40%)
