Outline (in English)

【授業の概要(Course Outline)】
The objective of this course is to provide you with the basic understanding of how you can conduct contrastive studies between Japanese, English, and other languages. Language is indeed a key for understanding various topics in our Graduate School. There are, however, many difficult technicalities in the research field of linguistics, to the extent that they become really high hurdles. So, this course hopefully works as an easy introduction to that research field. In this semester, we are going to do this by reading a textbook on phonetics, which constitutes the foundation of linguistic studies.

【到達目標(Learning Objectives)】
Three-fold:

1. to familiarise yourself with basic concepts and methodology of language studies,
2. to pursue generalisations through applying them,
3. to get accustomed to reading literature in foreign language(s).

【授業時間外の学習(Learning Activities Outside of Classroom)】
You should read in advance and be ready for being asked various questions, or being asked for giving comments. According to the MEX regulation, the course of this type expects you to spend 4 hours for preparation and reviewing.

【成績評価の方法と基準(Grading Criteria /Policy)】
- Basically, no absence allowed. Active participation in class sessions 50%, presentations 50%.

Based on the grading criteria set by the instructor, students that successfully achieve 60% or more of course goals will be able to earn a passing grade for the course.
