Outline (in English)

(Course outline) This course deals with the theme as “energy and materials” which relates to the environmental problems. We introduce the concept of thermodynamics in the field of physics. By means of the concept, we investigate various realistic cases for energy and waste problems in society. Thermodynamics states that energy is always conserved even though time passes (the first law), but the quality is spent (the second law). This is valid not only for energy systems but also for materials. In order to understand the concept of sustainability, it is very important to know the natural law as thermodynamics and the structure of the earth system including material circulation in nature. In class, additionally we obtain the concept of Life-Cycle Assessment and Ecological Footprint. Dynamics for biotic systems is simulated in clarifying symbiosis relation among different species.
(Learning Objectives) At the end of this class, we are expected to have the concepts as the earth system, the first and the second law of thermodynamics, the energy and waste problems in society, and their relation with human actions.
(Learning activities outside of classroom) We will be expected to spend two hours for preparation before each class. After it we need two hours to understand the content. The sum is four hours for each class.
(Grading Criteria /Policy) The grade of the class is decided with in-class contribution 50% and End-term report 50%.
