Outline (in English)

In this course of the Study in Business Administration class, master's students and occasional students learn about the research methods required to write a master's thesis on management. Based on the research topic submitted for the graduate school entrance exam, students will learn how to revise it and conduct further research. Students will learn scientific concepts such as hypothesis and proposition, deduction and induction, and theoretical and empirical research, as well as how to present the results of their management research at conferences, academic journals, and refereed journals.
【Learning Objectives】
This course aims to improve academic Japanese writing skills for writing master's research papers for international students who have passed Level 1 of the Japanese Language Proficiency Test or have equivalent Japanese language skills, as well as for Japanese students who have graduated from universities in Japan. Through small-group instruction in semester-long classes, students aim to acquire the skills necessary to complete an academically valuable research papers on management. The course aims to develop advanced thinking skills such as the ability to find research topics, understanding of previous research, reading comprehension of English and Japanese literature, skills for interview surveys, note-taking, charting, statistical analysis, Japanese writing skills, logical thinking skills, and other skills useful for writing a master's thesis on management.
【Methods】
Since there are many international students in the master's program and occasional students, the class will be conducted based on reading Japanese textbooks aloud. It is important not only to be able to understand the meaning of Japanese, but also to be able to read it accurately. In addition, students will improve their Japanese writing skills. First-year students who are planning to write their research papers are required to present a report on the theme. In preparation for a presentation, students study research methods related to management.
【Learning activities outside of classroom】
The standard preparation and review time for this class is 4 hours each.
Class 1: Conceptualize the theme of the master's thesis.
Class 2-3: Create an outline of the master's thesis theme and writing plan.
Class 4-8: Students will compare two or more retail stores or restaurants, present their findings, and write a report on their findings.
Class 9-13: Collect prior research related to the theme of the master's thesis and prepare a report resume. Students will devise specific research methods.
Class 14: Prepare materials for the interim report of the master's thesis and submit the report.

【Grading Criteria / Policy】
Evaluation method and distribution: Attendance and class participation (42%), in-class reporting (18%), final exam (report submission) (40%).
Evaluation criteria: Emphasis will be placed on attendance and in-class comments. The criteria to be met for in-class reports will be indicated in class. The evaluation criteria for the final exam (report submission) will be: solidity of the theoretical framework, solidity of the empirical analysis, logical coherence, novelty of the theme, and Japanese writing ability.
