Outline and objectives

This course explores various gender issues in contemporary Japanese society and critically reflects on the relationship between men and women, focusing on existing norms, practices, policies, and inequalities. Considering that every individual possesses multiple social identities, the intersections between gender and other social identities will also be examined. In addition to the discussions on (cisgender/heterosexual) women and men, the experiences of sexual and gender minorities are also included.

Goal

Students will be familiar with basic theories and concepts in the sociology of gender and understand how gender matters in their everyday lives. By critically examining the socio-cultural contexts in Japan, students will be equipped to think about how gender may operate similarly and differently in another society. As many theories/concepts introduced in this course come from Anglo-European societies, students are encouraged to discuss their limitations when applying them to Japan or other non-Western countries.
