Outline (in English)

【Course outline】
The purpose of this class is to deepen our understanding of the cultural, political, and social nature of the contemporary "performing arts," which have been developed mainly through physical expression, from the standpoint of "aesthetics".

In FY2024, the lecturers, who have been involved in the Fine Arts and Performing Arts fields for many years, will focus specifically on the activities of numerous artists with whom they have interacted, especially artists, choreographers, and directors working in contemporary dance and contemporary performance. We will expand our knowledge of their expressions and examine the background behind the creation of their expressions. The featured artists include Trisha Brown, Meredith Monk, Robert Wilson, Pina Bausch, Anne Teresa de Keesmaekel, and other internationally recognized masters of contemporary dance and performance. Through the works created by these artists, we will critically consider the possibilities of "physical expression" and the beauty it brings, as well as its modernity.

【Learning Objectives】
At the end of the course, students are expected to learn about the basic knowledge of contemporary trends in expression by artists in the performing arts and fine arts, as well as the history of art more broadly and its current situation in the world.

【Learning activities outside of classroom】
Students will be expected to have completed the required assignments after each class meeting. Your study time will be more than two hours for a class.

【Grading Criteria /Policy)】
Final grade will be calculated according to the following process the term-end report (70%), and in-class contribution (30%).
