Outline (in English)
【授業の概要(Course outline)】
The purpose of this class is to improve academic reading ability through the development of basic vocabulary, grammar and sentence structure analysis skills. Vocabulary development focuses on considering the context and structure to discern meaning, rather than strict translation between English and Japanese. Grammar and sentence structure instruction emphasizes the use and application of previous knowledge to read actual English. Using these skills, it aims to reinforce basic reading competence as well as rapidly and concisely summarize the gist of the content based on an understanding of paragraph structure.
【到達目標(Learning Objectives)】
1) To acquire the ability to read English sentences accurately and quickly.
2) To improve English vocabulary and grammar.
3) To develop the ability to read and understand academic papers.
4) To be able to extract the main points of a paragraph and summarize its contents concisely.
【授業時間外の学習(Learning activities outside of classroom)】
The standard study time outside of class for this class is 1 hour.
Students are expected to review the contents of the next lesson and look up unfamiliar words in a dictionary.
Review the contents after each class, and confirm what you understand and what you do not understand.
【成績評価の方法と基準(Grading Criteria /Policy)】
Mid-term exam (40%), final exam (40%), assignment submission (20%), the total of 60% or more is required to receive credit for the course. As a general rule, no credit will be given for four absences during a semester. Two late arrivals or early departures will be counted as one absence.

授業の概要と目的(何を学ぶか)Outline and objectives
本授業では、学術的な文章を読む際の基本的な語彙力、文法力、構文解析力を養成することによって、リーディング力の向上を図る。語彙については日本語との一対一対応による暗記に留まることなく、文脈や文構造を幅広く考慮に入れて意味をとらえる力へと発展させる。また文法と構文解析については既習知識を活用・応用して実際の英文を読む力を養う。これらのスキルをもとに、精読を通して個々の文の内容を正確に把握したり、文章全体を簡潔にかつ迅速に要約したり、必要な情報を検索したりすることができる読解力の養成を目指す。

2)語彙力と英文法の向上を図る。
3)学術的な文章を読み解くための語彙力・文法力を身につける。
4)パラグラフの要点を抽出し、内容を簡潔にまとめられるようになる。

成績評価の方法と基準Grading criteria
中間試験(40%)、期末試験(40%)、課題提出(20%)60パーセント以上で単位習得となる。学期中に4回欠席した場合、原則として単位は認めない。遅刻・早退は2回で欠席1回とみなす。
