Outline (in English)
The purpose of this class is to improve academic reading ability through the development of basic vocabulary, grammar and sentence structure analysis skills. Vocabulary development focuses on considering the context and structure to discern meaning, rather than strict translation between English and Japanese. Grammar and sentence structure instruction emphasizes the use and application of previous knowledge to read actual English. Using these skills, it aims to reinforce basic reading competence as well as rapidly and concisely summarize the gist of the content.
The class is intended to help students use their existing skills more effectively and acquire new skills that enable them to read complex academic texts in English more productively. In this class, students will improve their strategic reading skills and build their academic vocabulary enabling them to use and understand academic texts more efficiently. To do this, the class will augment and develop their critical thinking skills, provide real-time practice of the skills and strategies taught. Assignments will encourage students to use the skills that they acquire and become more confident in accessing academic texts in English.
The rationale for differing strategic reading skills is presented at the beginning of each unit and exercises provided that show how these strategies are applied to academic texts. Each unit is made up of four units, two per class, in which the skills and strategies are applied. These are reviewed periodically as the course continues. The vocabulary used in the readings is then reviewed and approaches to systematic vocabulary building are developed. Each unit ends with examples of features typical in academic texts in English to help students find their way in longer and more complicated examples of academic text.
A short mini-test will be given after each unit on the vocabulary presented in the whole unit.
General feedback will be given based on results of the mini-tests, and specific personalised feedback will given in the form of comments and corrections given to students in returned assignments.

授業の概要と目的(何を学ぶか)Outline and objectives
