Outline (in English)

Small and medium enterprises (SMEs) form the backbone of the Japanese economy. Previous research on SMEs has mainly focused on two major arguments. The first is the "Problem-driven" perspective, which suggests that SMEs face challenges in growth due to limited resources. The second is the "Contribution-driven" perspective, which highlights the potential and advantages of SMEs due to their flexibility. This course delves into general theories on SMEs while considering these two contrasting arguments. We will explore the following topics: 1) Defining small businesses, 2) Analyzing the challenges and potential advantages of SMEs, and 3) Understanding venture businesses. Additionally, we will host guest lecturers from SMEs in the Tama area to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of SME operations.
The objectives of this course are to gain a balanced perspective on SMEs and acquire practical insights from SME managers.
Before and after each class session, students are expected to dedicate four hours to comprehend the course content.
Your overall grade in the class will be determined by the following components: Term-end examination (60%) and short reports (40%).
