Outline (in English)

Course Outline: Amongst other Chinese classical novels, this course provides an overview of short novels called chuan-qi written during the Tang dynasty. Speaking of Chinese novels familiar to Japanese, you will be reminded of Romance of the Three Kingdoms, Water Margin, and Journey to the West all published during the Ming dynasty. These are all novels written in vernacular Chinese (=spoken language). In contrast, chuan-qi were written in literary language (=written language), which can be understood in kanbun. Chuan-qi during the Tang dynasty were broadly read by Japanese from ancient times and significantly influenced Japanese classical and modern literature. In this course, we will explore the literary qualities contained in chuan-qi during the Tang dynasty and learn about the underlying social and cultural background through reading individual works.
Learning Objectives: By the end of the course, students will:
A. understand the outline of the history of classical novels in the Tang dynasty;
B. acquire the ability to appreciate chuan-qi.; and
C. have acquired the basic skills necessary to read and comprehend Chinese materials.
Learning Activities Outside of the Classroom: Before/after each class meeting, students will be expected to spend four hours to understand the course content.
Grading Criteria/Policy: Term-end examination (100%)
