Outline (in English)

【Course outline】
In this class, we will use articles from Science Now, the online news of the science magazine Science, to introduce you to English sentences on a variety of topics, such as “Altitude Doping" and "Gastrointestinal system of the Japanese” The goal is to improve your vocabulary, reading comprehension, and logical thinking skills.

【Learning Objectives】
The goals of this course are threefold. First, students will develop vocabulary to the extent that they can translate important words and phrases from the textbook into Japanese and English. Students will also acquire reading comprehension skills to understand the concept of the "ladder of abstraction" and to be able to identify arguments and rationales. Finally, students will develop the logical thinking ability to structure arguments in consideration of the level of abstraction.

【Learning activities outside of classroom】
Students will be expected to have completed the required assignments after each class meeting. Your study time will be more than four hours for a class.

【Grading Criteria /Policy】
Ordinary score will be weighted 50% and basically all attendance is required to evaluate the level of participation in class. In-class examinations will be weighted at 50%, and tests and submissions in each class will be evaluated.
