Outline and objectives

Learning English for active communication and understanding in the international environment.

First of all, you will develop reading skills by dealing with texts written on a variety of topics. Furthermore, your speaking skills will be enhanced by participating in a variety of activities, such as pair & group work, delivering a presentation and practicing parroting. There will also be listening exercises, as well as short writing assignments based on the topics discussed in each unit. Through these exercises, you will become more familiar with the active use of language and gain higher word consciousness of vocabulary used in context.
Comments and explanation about assignments and answers to questions from students are given at the end of each class.

By the end of the course, students should be able to make presentations confidently.

Goal

This course aims to develop the four language skills (listening, speaking, reading and writing) by placing special emphasis on reading abilities.

You will practice and learn to understand written text, as well as to express effectively your ideas which will help you become more active and confident communicators in the global society.

This course will be conducted mainly in English. First of all, you will develop reading skills by dealing with texts written on a variety of topics. Reading: blind date; Vocabulary in context; Verbs of similar meaning; Writing: using homonyms – words with two different meanings

Week 4[対面/face to face]:Unit 2 Whatever makes you happy (reading and listening)

Reading and listening exercise: I love what I do; Speaking: my perfect day, pair work; Grammar: present simple and present continuous; have/have got

Week 5[対面/face to face]:Unit 2 Whatever makes you happy (reading)

Reading: the happiness quiz; Vocabulary review; Listening and speaking exercise: talking about neighbours; group discussion: important things in life

Grading criteria

Students are expected to actively participate in class, prepare two presentations, complete writing assignments and homework and pass the final test.

In principle, no more than 3 absences will be permitted per semester for the student to receive academic credit in the course.

Your work will be evaluated as follows:
- Active participation in class: 20%
- Writing assignments, homework, tests: 40%
- Presentations: 40%

Textbook. Please bring also a notepad and pencil/pen to write notes, instructions, writing assignments, etc. when requested.
